This was the start of something big. In 2018 Jim and Sonia headed East to China taking in as many Silk Road wonders as we could, trying to avoid the extremes of heat and cold and having as much fun as possible. We left in March 2018, inevitably via Beaubery in France, to drop off some of our possessions, including our regular car and then the adventure with our Toyota Landcruiser began.
I do owe a debt of gratitude to my good friend Blanca Fernandez whose solo adventures across the globe on her bike, were nothing short of inspirational.
We drove from Greenwich in London to Venice, Romania, Istanbul and many wonderful places to the East including Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and China. We made it to the beginning of the Silk Road in Xi’an, were still on speaking terms and still had a vehicle, and continued South out of China through Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore and ended up in Australia.
Our blogs documented the highs and lows of this fabulous journey and believe me, if we can do this, so can you!
Just to prove we have not been put off altogether, we are now planning new adventures and we will begin blogging about these shortly. Before the year that was Covid, we did some modifications and improvements to our Landcruiser. She now has an electric pop top and a fabulous 280 degree awning. But with the intervention of lockdown and physical demands of being a bit older, we have opted for a larger Mercedes Sprinter for our next adventure. It will never be as versatile as Landy, who was game for any terrain, but it will be more comfortable and spacious. We cannot bring ourselves to sell Landy, quite yet, but our next adventure will be with a rather large Black Beast!
